Whether you’re dealing with a sore elbow that’s stopping you from playing, or a nagging injury that’s been hanging around for months, getting the right treatment early can make all the difference. Tennis elbow is one of the most common overuse injuries we see, and while rest can help settle symptoms, it rarely addresses the reason the problem developed in the first place.
That’s why we recommend seeing Andrew Bolton, an experienced Auckland Sports Osteopath who has worked with a wide range of sporting injuries and understands the demands tennis places on the body.
Andrew takes a whole-body approach to treatment. Rather than focusing solely on the painful area, he assesses how the shoulder, wrist, upper back and neck are moving, along with the way your body is transferring force through each stroke. Restrictions or weakness elsewhere in the chain often place extra stress on the elbow, and addressing these can help improve recovery while reducing the risk of the injury returning.
Treatment is tailored to where you are in the recovery process. In the early stages, the focus is on reducing pain, settling irritated tissues and restoring comfortable movement through hands-on treatment and joint mobilisation. As symptoms improve, treatment shifts towards improving mobility throughout the upper body, restoring normal movement patterns and reducing unnecessary load on the elbow.
Once the pain has settled, Andrew will guide you through a progressive rehabilitation programme designed to rebuild tendon strength and improve resilience. This typically includes specific strengthening exercises, mobility work and practical advice to help you return to training and competition with confidence.
For tennis players, treatment also extends beyond the clinic. Andrew understands the physical demands of the sport and can work alongside your coach to identify movement patterns or technique issues that may be contributing to the problem.
Andrew holds a Master of Osteopathy and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Biology) and has extensive experience treating sports injuries, chronic pain and movement dysfunction. He is registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand and is an ACC-accredited treatment provider.
If you’re struggling with tennis elbow or another tennis-related injury, we’d be happy to connect you with Andrew and help you get back on court as quickly and safely as possible.
Andrew operates out of Essential Osteopathy, which is located within the Parnell Natural Health multidisciplinary clinic.
